Due to the concern regarding tap water, the sale of bottled water has exploded. Supermarket aisles have expanded their selection and space devoted to bottled water. The World Wide Fund for Nature commissioned a 26 page study called Bottled Water: Understanding a social phenomenon, in which it reveals:

• World bottled water market is estimated to be worth $22 billion.
• Bottled water, although up to 1,000 times the price of tap water, may be no safer, or healthier than tap water.
• More standards regulate tap water in Europe and the US than bottled water.
• Every year 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water and toxic chemicals can be released during the manufacture and disposal of the bottles.
